The Terms Behind the Game

People who are new to the game of poker may be confused by the various lingo that is associated with the game. Even learning the rules of how to play a game like Texas Hold ‘Em can be very confusing to someone who doesn’t know what some of the terms mean. For example, the initial bets in a round of poker often consist of blind bets, but people who have never played the game before will not be aware of what this means. A blind bet is a forced bet made by players before any other cards are dealt and also before the players are allowed to examine their face-down cards.

There are also times in the game –depending on which version is being played—when some cards being played don’t appear to have any affect on the outcome of the game at all. These cards are called blank cards. This means that do not seem to be affecting the standings of the players’ hands in any way.

People who are new to playing poker may also not be aware of the meaning of equity. Fortunately, equity is a term that many people are more than eager to learn. Equity is basically a person’s rightful share of the pot. Likewise, a family pot is one in which all of the players call before the flop, an action which is performed by the dealer. The flop involves the first three community cards being dealt face up by the dealer.

There are a few other terms that players should become acquainted with. For example, if a heads up is taking place, this means that the pot is being contested by two players, or that the pot is at stake to be won by either of those two players. One of the most important terms of course is the house – this is the entity which is hosting the game and providing the gaming materials.
